Artist’s Statement 2026 | JM Kayne
It has always felt natural for me to gravitate toward teaching and learning. Ever since my childhood dream of becoming a teacher came true in college, I’ve continued seeking opportunities that let me share knowledge while also growing from what I learn. As an artist, my curiosity never seems to run out. I’m constantly drawn to new creative mediums that keep me inspired and challenged.
Over the past 40 years, I’ve explored many forms of creative expression—drawing, painting, blogging, writing magazine articles, creating artwork, giving presentations, doing voiceovers, hosting events, and producing videos and vlogs. A period of unemployment a few years ago became an unexpected turning point, giving me the time and space to explore these passions more deeply. During that chapter, I found tremendous inspiration in the works of authors like Julia Cameron (The Artist’s Way) and Elizabeth Gilbert (Big Magic).
But above everything else, my greatest source of influence has always been my faith. I believe that each of us is God’s masterpiece—created with purpose, intention, and unique gifts. That belief guides my path, even when it doesn’t align with what’s popular. I stand confidently in my identity as a Catholic Christian, and I draw deep inspiration from the lives of artistic saints who lived their creativity with courage and devotion.
In 2023, at age 39, I published my first book, The Creative Passport. It explores 12 core areas of life that become richer when approached with creativity. Many people say, “I’m not creative,” but I believe creativity begins with what I call creative curiosity. If you have that spark, you already possess the potential to create. The Creative Passport is more than a book—it’s a mindset and a commitment to living creatively. It invites readers into self-discovery, spiritual alignment, and the expression of their unique voice.
My work blends personal milestones with the stories of others, always guided by curiosity and openness. I hope to spark meaningful conversations and encourage readers to embark on creative journeys of their own. At its heart, my message is simple: each of us carries a creative passport—an invitation to explore, express, and continually evolve.
As I look ahead to IWW 2025, I’m excited about the possibility of contributing to and being inspired by the theme Here and There. I currently have three book projects in progress that fit beautifully within that theme, and I hope to further develop them during the residency:
- L&D Simplified –A practical guide to Human Resources Learning & Development. As someone passionate about teaching and training, I want to demystify the L&D process for professionals eager to grow in this field.
- Past Loves and Present – A nonfiction narrative exploring a woman’s emotional journey between her past and present loves—mirroring the movement between “here” and “there.” It reflects on lessons from the past and the meaning of love in the present.
- In My Heart – A reflective collection of poetry, prayers, and personal ponderings—a spiritual and creative offering inspired by moments of introspection and faith.
Through memoir, poetry, essays, and narrative nonfiction, my writing aims to bridge the ordinary with the extraordinary. I draw from pivotal moments—my own and those shared with me—to explore creativity as a journey shaped by discovery, resilience, and transformation. My hope is to empower others to unlock their creative potential by removing the fear and mystery around the process and celebrating the distinct voice within each of us.
Amping ug Ampo! God bless!
