The Basílica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebú is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. It is a National Historical Landmark and is considered the “Mother and Head of all Churches” in the country.

Travel Time from Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)

Travel time varies depending on the time of day and the traffic flow across the bridges connecting Mactan Island to mainland Cebu:

  • Private Car / Taxi / Grab: 30 to 50 minutes

    • The distance is approximately 13–15 km. During peak traffic hours (rush hour), this can extend to over an hour.

  • Public Transport (MyBus + Jeepney/Taxi): 1.5 to 2.5 hours

    • You can take the MyBus from the airport to SM City Cebu, and then take a taxi or a local jeepney (bound for City Hall/Magellan’s Cross) to the Basilica.

Key Features

  • The Santo Niño Image: The church houses the original wooden statue of the Child Jesus, which was given by Ferdinand Magellan to Queen Juana of Cebu in 1521.

  • Architecture: The current stone structure was completed between 1739 and 1740. It features a blend of Muslim, Romanesque, and Neoclassical architectural influences.

  • Sinulog Festival: The Basilica is the spiritual center of the Sinulog Festival, held every third Sunday of January, attracting millions of devotees.

     

Practical Information

  • Opening Hours: Generally open daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM (Mass schedules vary; Fridays are particularly busy with the weekly Novena).

  • Admission: Entry to the Basilica is Free. There is a small fee if you wish to visit the onsite museum.

  • Dress Code: Strictly enforced. Visitors must dress modestly.

    • Prohibited: Short skirts, sleeveless tops (sandos), spaghetti straps, and shorts for both men and women.

    • Tip: Shawls or wraps are sometimes available for rent/borrowing at the entrance, but it is best to come prepared.

  • Candle Lighting: A popular tradition is lighting red candles at the outdoor “sinulog” area while performing a small prayer dance.
